Cinema on Wheels
1. “Until last spring, I had never been to a cinema,” says Sami Jlassi, a fifteen-year-old pupil from a small village near Jendouba. “The nearest cinema is more than two hours away by bus. I used to watch films on my father’s old phone, and the screen was so small that I couldn’t see the actors’ faces.”
2. In April 2025, a big blue truck arrived in the village square. It was a mobile cinema run by a group of young volunteers who travel across the north-west of the country. In less than an hour, they set up a giant screen, a sound system and two hundred chairs. That evening, almost the whole village came to watch an animated film about a boy and a sea creature. “Children were shouting and laughing, and some old people were crying at the end. It was magic!” Sami remembers.
3. The next morning, the volunteers organised a free workshop for teenagers. Sami learnt how to write a short story, film it with a phone and edit it on a computer. Since then, he has made three short films with his friends, and in June 2026, one of them won the second prize at a youth film festival in Le Kef. “I’m sure that I’ll be a film director one day,” he says. “And I hope I’ll bring cinema back to villages like mine.”
